My students made home-made dog treats to donate to S.C.R.A.P.S. In this process, they got to be creative and make their dog treat in any shape they wanted to. They were so excited to learn that they were making a difference.
I introduced this projects to my students by showing them pictures of dogs that are in the shelter. We brainstormed different things we could do to make a difference. My students made home-made dog treats to donate to S.C.R.A.P.S. They were put into groups of four and each of them had an ingredient to add. Everyone got a turn to stir the ingredients up and then we divided the dough into four equal parts. They each got to roll their part out and then make it into the shape of a dog bone, or whatever shape they wanted to. This was a service to the community because in the end we would be delivering the dog treats to S.C.R.A.P.S. My students learned that even thought they are small, they can play an important role in our community by volunteering or donating their home-made dog treats. They were so excited to learn that such a small project like this would help make a difference.
I was unable to do this project in my placement. I did it in a daycare setting which was difficult because students are coming and leaving at different times, where in a classroom setting they come in and leave at the same time. If you try this project, I suggest sending the recipe home with your students to encourage them to make more dog treats to donate or to make them for their own dog at home.
