Kick off National Food Day’s week of celebrations by joining Dining Services, The Office of Sustainability, and SAIL at the campus garden (behind the EWU Red Barn) for complementary pumpkin carving and a compost how-to!
Tuesday, October 23rd 8:30-10:30am – Suck Less
Learn about plastic straw impacts to the environment as well as their alternatives with the Office of Sustainability at the Campus Mall
Tuesday, October 23rd 1pm – Trash Pickup
Hosted by ASEWU, help give back by cleaning up the campus before homecoming weekend. Students can plan to meet in the Campus Mall from 1-2 p.m.
Wednesday, October 24th 10am-2pm – Real Food Fair in the JFK Library
Come out and discuss these concerns with members of EWU’s Dining Services, Office of Sustainability, Sustainability Club, the Office of Community Engagement, Health, Wellness, & Prevention Services, and more! Your involvement will be rewarded with delicious fall treats like organic apples and locally sourced Hot Apple Cider (make sure to bring your own reusable mug!) The Office of Community Engagement will also be collaborating with Second Harvest to provide a Pop-Up pantry and free food items while supplies last!
Wednesday, October 24th @ 3pm – Common Read Panel Discussion in Patterson 126

Why Celebrate National Food Day?
For the past couple of years, Dining & Catering Services has partnered with The Office of Sustainability and other EWU Campus Department/Organizations to hold a National Food Day event at the EWU Cheney campus. This year, we are changing things up a bit and holding a bigger Real Food Fair on Wednesday, October 24th, from 10:00 – 2:00. Weather permitting – we will be out in the campus mall.
National Food day was created to begin to inspire Americans around the country to change their diets, celebrate REAL food, and push for improvements in food policies.
Why should I get involved?
Today’s American diet greatly contributes to many widespread problems such as chronic disease, food insecurity, hunger, as well as taking a toll on our environment. As a nation, we have the resources to make a change and do better. By joining us on National Food Day you will be taking the initiative to build the momentum that is needed to change the American food system.
Food Day priorities include:
- Promote safer, healthier diets
- Support sustainable and organic farms
- Reduce hunger and improve food access
- Reform factory farms to protect the environment and farm animals
- Support fair working conditions for food and farm workers.
