Process Timeline
How can you time the tasks you need to carry out your study abroad successfully? How long can you expect each step to take? Below is the timeline suggested to make sure that you plan effectively and meet deadlines. “Start date” means the date that you will leave the U.S. for your destination country.
9 months to 1 year+ before start date
- Reflect on your goals for carrying out a study abroad
- Explore program types
- Explore program options
- Create a list of programs that interest you
- Talk with your academic advisor about including a study abroad
- Visit the EWU Global office in Patterson 345 to get started
- Apply for scholarships
- Apply for an exchange if this type of program interests you
- Get a passport or renew your passport if needed
6 months to 9 months+ before start date
- Decide if you will use Financial Aid
- Apply for scholarships
- Identify which program you will carry out
- Connect with representative from this program to ask questions
- Find out the enrollment and refund deadlines for the program
- Note the travel advisory level of your destination country
Three months+ before start date
- Turn in your signed Financial Aid form
- Turn in your Travel Petition if EWU requires one for the travel advisory
- Make plans to get your visa
- Meet with your academic advisor to choose possible courses
- Enroll in courses you will take in destination country
- Enroll in the EWU course if you are participating in a faculty-led program
Two months+ before start date
- Turn in your course transfer worksheet (signed by your advisor)
- Sign up for On-Call travel insurance
- Get enrolled in the ABBR course (placeholder for your study abroad courses)
- Communicate with the representative of the program for logistics
One month+ before start date
- Meet with EWU Global staff to ensure travel details & safety information
- Meet with EWU Global for pre-trip reflection on learning
