Popsicle Sticks are in a cup and each one has the student’s name on it in the class, which help to easily form groups. This supports students because forming groups is one less thing a student has to worry about. All students end up with a partner or will end up in groups smoothly and easily.
Each student will have a dedicated section of the room to themselves where they will post their work throughout the year. The first thing they’ll put on their bulletin board is a house they’ve decorated to make look like theirs. This is helpful because it will make each student feel like they have a sense of belonging in the classroom.
Recognition for good behavior is crucial to reinforcing the desired behavior, especially if a student often misbehaves. This tool is used on students that need that special attention when they’ve done something good. This will begin to motivate them internally and externally to behave better.
When used carefully, humor can extinguish negative behaviors and help maintain an enjoyable classroom environment. The teacher must be able to make a joke in the moment that defuses the tension and depersonalizes the situation.
The Yacker Tracker looks like a stop light with green, yellow, and red lights to measure noise level in the classroom. This device is great for helping students maintain an appropriate level of noise during different tasks throughout the school day. When the classroom begins to get too loud, the tracker will flash red and begin buzzing to alert students that their noise level needs to be adjusted.
Kovalik’s lifelong guidelines and life skills include anything and everything that one can use over the course of their lives to help form the foundation for positive, valued relationships. The particular skills your class focuses on can be exactly what’s listed, or can be created collaboratively by your classroom according to the skills that they find most important. These life skills also help shape the culture of the classroom along with a creating a pathway to good classroom leadership and encourage reflective thinking.
Tribes community is a preventative tool to create a sense of belonging in the classroom for the students. Through the development of respect responsibility etc., you can build a positive environment in your classroom.
The Refrigerator Wall is a technique used to display the student’s work and/or achievement. This is helpful because it gives the students a sense of pride and belonging to see their work displayed to the class.
Acknowledgements are a supportive phase tool that allows students to recognize other students that use Life Skills. Through peers recognizing the good things other peers are doing, a sense of community is established and strengthened.
Positive phrasing is praising students who are demonstrating pro social skills. It is helpful when some students are having a hard time staying on task so they can see what they should be doing.
