Fiction Submission Guidelines
*We are currently only accepting submissions from undergraduate students of Eastern Washington University. Follow us on social media and we will announce if this changes!
Submitting to multiple genres is accepted and encouraged. Please send each genre submission in a separate email. Make sure to follow the correct guidelines for each corresponding genre.
General Guidelines:
Authors will submit only their own original work that has not been previously published in a newspaper, magazine, or periodical. If a work is accepted by us, the author will retain copyright for the purpose of expanding upon the work or for creating anthologies and books. However, works accepted by our magazine will not be published in other literary magazines.
Authors will submit only on behalf of themselves. It is assumed that the submitter of the document is its author. Plagiarism and intellectual theft are not tolerated, and if discovered, will result in the exclusion of the submitter’s works from the magazine.
Simultaneous submissions are allowed. Contact us as soon as possible if your work has been accepted for publication elsewhere.
Attention to conventions for grammar, spelling, and formatting are essential. Please ensure that your work has been edited and proofread and is ready for publication before submitting it to us. Contact the EWU Writer’s Center if you would like personalized help to ensure your work is at the highest possible quality.
Fiction Submission Guidelines
Each author may send us one email submission including up to three original fiction works they feel are representative of their abilities. Each work should be on its own Word document (.doc, .docx file types).
Fiction submissions will be no longer than 10,000 words in total. Submissions longer than 10,000 words will not be read or considered for publication.
Your entire submission should be double spaced and use Times New Roman 12pt font. Including a header with the page number and surname/family name at the top right corner of the document is optional but is appreciated for our convenience.
Email Headline
[Author name as desired for publication] – Fiction Submission – [“Story Title”]
Example: Madison Flint – Fiction Submission – “My Story”
Document Name and File Type
[Author name] – [Story Title] attached as a .doc or .docx file
Example: Madison Flint – My Story.docx
Email Text Guidelines
Cover letters are not required. However, please include a short bio in the body text of your email. This bio should be written in the third person and may include such information as your name, pronouns, major or field of study, and any previous publications. Do not include this information in the text of your attached documents.
If you have a preferred name or pen name that is not your legal name, please use your preferred name instead of your legal name for both the headline of your email and the titles of your submission documents. We will anticipate publishing your work under the name that you put in the headline of your email.
We understand that your fiction will likely handle sensitive topics. Please consider indicating in the body of your email whether your work contains themes such as physical or sexual violence, mental illness, trauma, etc. for ease of access.
Other Information
While we are committed to representing a diverse range of identities and perspectives in our magazine, our foremost concern is the quality of the work we publish. We welcome work from writers of all educational backgrounds—you do not need to be an English or Creative Writing major to submit your writing to us.
We will reach out by email to contact you about the status of your submission. Please understand that it may take our editorial team several weeks to read, discuss, and respond to your submission. Our team may also suggest edits to your work. If we are considering publishing your work, we will reach out to you by email to discuss possible edits before publication.
Contact us via email at nwbvdmagazine@ewu.edu if you have questions about the submission or editing processes before you submit.
We look forward to reading your submissions!
