Community Council
What is Community Council?
Community Council is a student-run organization dedicated to advocating for the interests and welfare of residence hall students, while also providing opportunities for engagement and involvement among students who reside in the residence halls. It is an extension of the Resident Housing Association where residents can advocate for hall events and improvements.
Opportunities for Involvement
If you want to be involved in your building’s Community Council, there are a couple of ways to do so!
Executive Officers – There are 4 Executive Officers in each building. These folks are responsible for running meetings, planning events, managing the budget, and outreach to the residents.
Floor Representatives – Each floor in a building will have 3 floor representatives. These folks will combine to have voting power for their respective floors. They can, but are not required to, be involved in events put on by the Community Council Exec Officers.
Executive Officer Positions
Community Council Chair
- Act as overseer of your Hall’s Community Council
- Conduct Community Council and Executive Council meetings
- Work with the Administrative and Finance Officer to create meeting agendas
- Responsible for coordinating hall elections and voting in Community Council
- Meet with Residential Life Coordinator (RLC) once a month or as needed
- Facilitates the setting of goals and objectives for your Hall’s Community Council
- Must be involved in all programming Community Council coordinates
RHA Representative
- Attend weekly RHA meetings, take notes, and provide updates at Hall Council meetings.
- Act as the RHA Representative at RHA meetings (vote, be present for roll call, and encourage residents from your hall to attend RHA).
- Answer questions related to RHA at Hall Council and in the hall.
- Work with the Publicity, Marketing, and Social Media Program Coordinator to promote RHA endeavors in your residence hall.
- Must be involved in all programming Community Council coordinates
Publicity, Marketing, & Social Media Officer
- Act as an overseer of all your Hall’s social media accounts
- Keep a calendar visible to residents in the Hall lobby of upcoming Campus and Hall Events
- Report on Campus and Hall events coming up in all Community Council and Executive Council meetings
- Work with CAs to market their programs
- Create and distribute the Hall Newsletter weekly in a timely manner
- Must be involved in all programming Community Council coordinates
Administrative & Finance Officer
- Create the meeting agenda for Community Council and Executive Council meetings with the Community Council Chair
- Facilitates distribution of agenda to each person attending Community Council and Executive Council Meetings
- Record minutes at each Community Council and Executive Council meeting
- Distributes meeting notes to people within twenty-four hours of the Community Council meeting and Executive Council meeting
- Communicate to residents of any Community Council meeting time changes
- Work with the RLC to manage the hall budget and submit financial reports upon request
- Submit a budget report at each Community Council Meeting including outstanding appropriation, income, and fund balance
- Prepare a budget plan with the members of Community Council by the fourth week of each quarter to be approved by a ⅔ majority of Community Council
- Must be involved in all programming Community Council coordinates
