Sororities and fraternities are inter/national organizations that focus on leadership development, community service, philanthropy, and social support.
A sorority or fraternity can help personalize your experience at college by:
- offering a scholastic support system
- providing hands-on leadership experience in leading work groups, managing budgets, and interacting with other students, faculty, and university administrators
- exposing you to potential career tracks through educational programming and alumni discussions
- offering the chance to give back to the community through philanthropy and community service projects
- creating close friendships with peers who will cheer you on when times are tough
It is through all these available opportunities that sorority and fraternity members are able to graduate from college at a higher rate than those not involved in Greek Life.
YES! At Eastern Washington University, we have some chapters that have houses and some that do not. There is no requirement to live in a chapter house immediately after joining.
Organizations with chapter houses typically have members live in the house their second year of membership to receive the full experience of being involved in brotherhood/sisterhood.
Each chapter house has their own set of requirements and selection process for living in. It is recommended that you ask questions about each chapter's housing policy during recruitment.
Yes! Our members are encouraged to join other organizations to become more involved on campus. Being in Greek Life may help you find other organizations to join as well; there are many students in Sorority and Fraternity Life who are involved in housing, church groups, clubs, student employment, and much more!
The sorority and fraternity experience is what you put into it. Participating in any worthwhile activity always requires an investment of one's time.
Time commitment depends on the level of involvement in the sorority or fraternity; for example, officers will dedicate more time to the sorority or fraternity due to additional responsibilities.
Research has suggested that involved college students are more likely to graduate and they report greater satisfaction with their college experience. Through Sorority & Fraternity involvement, members learn how to balance academics, work, campus involvement, and social commitments. It's all about time management!
We have three councils at EWU, each with a unique recruitment process. Check out our How to Join Tab for more information on the recruitment process for each.
Beginning with the 2022 Fall term, Sam’s Law requires that each Washington IHE (Institute of Higher Education) must provide hazing awareness and prevention education either in person or electronically to students and employees, including student employees, who have direct ongoing contact with students.
Each public and private institution of higher education shall also maintain and publicly report actual findings of violations by any student organization, athletic team, or living group of the public or private institution of higher education’s code of conduct, anti-hazing policies, or state or federal laws relating to hazing or offenses related to alcohol, drugs, sexual assault, or physical assault.

Sorority and fraternity members have several opportunities to get involved in leadership both in and out of their organization. Each chapter has an executive board of elected officers who facilitate chapter events, meetings, educational programs, and more.
Our members are some of the most involved and recognized leaders on campus.
Yes! Nearly half of our Sorority and Fraternity members are first-generation students and find it incredibly helpful to be a part of an organization that supports them through college and beyond. We encourage everyone to sign up for recruitment, regardless if anyone in their family is part of a Greek organization.
