1. Find a Safe Spot to Pull Over
Reduce your speed and engage your turn signal to indicate your intention to pull over. Pull into a nearby parking lot or onto a wide shoulder. If on the shoulder, remember to turn on your hazard lights.
2. Remain Calm
Turn off the radio and roll down the driver’s side window. Place both of your hands on the steering wheel at 10 and 2. Do not reach into your bag or into any compartments.
3. Wait for Instructions
Do not speak first. The police officer will likely ask for your license and registration. Inform the officer of their location and request permission to retrieve them.
4. Be Civil
Be respectful and do not argue with the police officer. If you feel you were wrongly ticketed that can be addressed in court.
5. Sign the Citation
If the officer gives you a citation you may need to sign it. Signing the citation is not an admission of guilt. If you believe you were wrongly charged you have the right to dispute that charge in court.
