What is Space Management

Construction and Planning Services maintains comprehensive facilities space data, space reporting, analysis and facility data information for Eastern Washington University. Space management data resources include: CAD drawings, floor plans, mapping, room capacity data, fire life safety data and space utilization information.

Our ongoing mission is to maintain accurate space data and make that data available to the university community as a resource to inform facilities decisions and provide support to implement projects and initiatives.

Space is a University Resource

Space is a key university asset owned by the Eastern Washington University. Physical space is not permanently allocated to occupants or users, nor is it ‘owned’ by those occupants or users. All University personnel are charged with ensuring the best use of space. University space resources should be utilized in the most efficient and effective manner to best serve programmatic and strategic priorities of the university.

Exemption from following the SPAC processes

All campus facilities, including leased facilities, are subject to this process except:

  • Space and facilities reserved for auxiliaries, such as housing, the Pence Union Building, and the University Recreation Center;
  • Space utilized for Early Head Start programs;
  • Space rented from Washington State University or Bellevue College; and,
  • Construction of a new building, which has a separate process for determining space utilization.

Space Inventory Classification

Eastern Washington University uses the Post secondary Education Facilities Inventory and Classification Manual (FICM) codification system. All space functional use categories and space inventory codification will conform to these nationally accepted conventions.

FAQs

A: No, the SPAC is a group made up of representatives from each of the Vice President’s areas, and appointees from the President’s Office, Faculty Senate and Associated Student s of EWU. This group makes recommendations to university leadership (Executive Leadership Team) that evaluate and determine campus space needs.

A: Yes, each vice president is accountable for the utilization of existing building space assigned to the division or to the college in accordance with the designated usage and applicable utilization standardsl perspective. All staff moves must be communicated with Construction & Planning Services to update building information in multiple databases.

A: Requests must be submitted by the vice president or designee or, for disability accommodation requests, by Human Resources. See Instructions page for more detail.

A: Open offices, in groups or individual, fall under the President’s purview via the Space Planning Advisory Committee as Swing Space. These are strategically held vacant for temporary placement of individuals in the event of emergencies likes fire, floods, or construction/renovation.

A: The Space Planning Advisory Committee meets quarterly and committee decisions are provided 1-5 business days after Committee meetings take place.

A: The information contained on the form will allow us to update the Campus Space Management system, Active Directory, Postal Services and Emergency notifications.

All EWU classrooms on the Cheney, WA campus that are considered general use (FICM code 110) are centrally scheduled by the Records and Registration and those considered specialized use (FICM code 210) are departmentally scheduled.

Each classroom schematic will be posted on the wall in its associated room throughout campus.

The custodial staff in each building will use these posted schematics/signs in order to setup each classroom. This will ensure that the physical classroom layout and actual seat count matches the information contained in the Registrars/R25/AiM databases.

Information for both 110/210 classroom types includes:

  • room schematics
  • basic space statistics
  • attributes (square footage, maximum fire code occupancy, seating capacity, and recommended seating layout)
