R. Keeth Matheny, a.k.a. Coach Rudy, is an award-winning teacher, speaker and consultant whose expertise in Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) strategies has gained national attention. Matheny returns to Eastern this month to lead three interactive Zoom sessions hosted by EWU’s Department of Education, the Department of Psychology, and the School of Social Sciences.
The first will be from 7-8:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 19 (and repeated 7-8:30 p.m., Thursday, May 27) and will involve a discussion of the “teenage brain,” and how classroom teachers and others can use SEL strategies to better support and help teenagers manage their emotions and make positive decisions. Matheny will share approaches that can be used right away to support students’ emotional health during the Covid-19 pandemic and beyond with individual students as well as within schools and communities.
You can register here for the the May 19th session; and here for the May 27th event.
On Thursday, May 20 from 6-8 p.m. Matheny will focus on EWL strategies for empathy and equity, along with how empathy and equity are tied to cultural proficiency and inclusion. The session will cover the components of empathy, and will involve engaging activities to practice each component. Matheny will then help participants make connections between the skill of empathy and how it can fuel the way people respond to others, even those whom we perceive as different from us. The session will also look at a tool for awareness of our responses to others because when we know better we generally do better. There will be enjoyable opportunities to interact with others, build skills, and make connections. It will be a positive and uplifting take on how empathy can help us build a better world for ourselves and our communities.
This session is funded by the EWU Eagle Foundation for the Roadmap to Reopening Eastern Washington through Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Register in advance to save your spot!
