On May 17, EWU celebrated our annual alumni awards, recognizing some of our most distinguished graduates and the significant contributions they’ve made to our communities.
Now, on June 15, we will celebrate as 3,500 more EWU undergraduate and graduate students achieve their degrees. Here are a few glimpses of our extraordinary new graduates.
A member of the Washington Army National Guard, Ashley Cardinal is graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Children’s Studies. The post-9/11 G.I. Bill helped pay for her college. However, as mother of four children and also working full time while serving in the Guard, she found the road to a degree highly challenging. Sometimes taking only one class at a time, she never gave up. She plans to teach once she retires from the Guard. More
John Estey double majored in Criminal Justice and Political Science and worked in Olympia as an EWU intern with the Washington State Legislative Internship Program. Learning the ropes from our Government Relations Director, David Buri, John worked hard to convey messages to legislators about public higher education and Washington’s student needs. Now he’s delighted to have landed a job as district representative for Congressman Dan Newhouse (4th District, Sunnyside).
Jeanine Kayitesi is graduating with a degree in Communication Studies. Born and raised in the Democratic Republic of Congo, she was surrounded by civil war and turmoil. After Jeanine’s father died, her mother took the family to a refugee camp in Rwanda with the slim hope of finding a new home. Her family was selected to come to the U.S., and they settled in Spokane. Now, proud to be graduating, she credits Eastern with transforming her life. More
Thirty-five hundred EWU graduates have thirty-five hundred compelling stories. I’m so proud of our students! I know you join me in wishing them all the best as they embark on the next stage of their life journeys.
