Eastern Washington University has partnered with the Girl Scouts of Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho to sponsor a new STEM Mobile.
The van will conduct outreach to young girls across the region, bringing STEM-related curriculum and experiments to rural areas. EWU provided funding, as well as curriculum support (led by Bo Idsardi, PhD, assistant professor of biology), and also designed the vehicle wrap as part of our sponsorship commitment. The vehicle will also include EWU Admissions and STEM-related materials to further our outreach and recruitment efforts.
“The STEM Mobile will be a great way to help young women across eastern Washington to see themselves as scientists and engineers,” says David Bowman, PhD, dean of EWU’s College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. “EWU and the College of STEM are proud to partner with the Girl Scouts to help the young women of our region become the next generation of leaders in STEM.”
The STEM Mobile’s very first stop was on May 1 in Sunnyside, Wash., to visit a troop that faced a huge challenge in the 2020 cookie sale with their region staying in Phase 1. “We visit them first to say thanks, inspire their Girls in STEM and then it heads on to Pasco, Walla Walla and then Sandpoint,” said Brian Newberry, executive director of Girl Scouts of Eastern Washington & Northern Idaho. He further commented on the design work of Ryan Gaard, design supervisor in University Relations at EWU, “Look at the wrap! That is all EWU graphic designers! They nailed it! Go Eags!”
