Dear Campus Community,
I am deeply saddened by and I fully condemn the horrific act of hate and anti-Semitism perpetrated at the Temple Beth Shalom in Spokane on Monday. The desecration of a sacred place of worship and memorial is something that I strongly denounce. As a campus community we must repudiate the ideas of hate and division that stand behind this abhorrent activity. This heinous act is a hate crime and it must not be allowed acceptance or normalcy in our community.
As a university dedicated to truth and learning, we must come together in solidarity and in support of the Jewish community in our region. Hate and acts of violence are antithetical to the mission of Eastern: learning, education, and the advancement of all. Those ideas of hate must find no home here.
I hope that those responsible are held accountable for their actions and that our communities can find some measure of healing through solidarity. If you feel moved to support the temple, they are accepting donations to help cover the cost of cleaning up the graffiti; donations may be made online.
