EWU retiree George Berdis passed away peacefully in Cheney on August 28, 2019 at the age of 86.
According to an obituary published in The Spokesman-Review on September 1, George Berdis graduated from Spokane Community College. He enlisted with the United States Air Force in 1953, and honorably served for 20 years before retiring at Fairchild Air Force Base. George and his wife Myrna decided to continue living in Cheney, where George worked for several local companies before he and Myrna both retired from Eastern Washington University.
According to EWU records, George Berdis retired from Custodial Services in 1998 after nine years of service to Eastern.
George and Myrna welcomed three children into their home, followed by nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren according to George’s obituary. His family notes that George was accomplished at woodworking, loved to garden and fish, and enjoyed restoring his Volkswagen Beetle.
A committal service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 5 at the Washington State Veterans Cemetery in Medical Lake. A memorial service will follow at 1 p.m. at the Cheney Congregational Church, 423 N. 6th Street.
