Valuable Student Experience: Work as a Vote Entry Clerk on Election Day

The Associated Press (AP) is once again partnering with EWU, the Journalism Program, and ASEWU to hire up to 300 students to work as vote entry clerks for the Nov. 3 General Election. The AP has worked with EWU on this project every two years since the 2000 General Election.

Because of the pandemic, the AP will not be able to create a call center physically located on Eastern’s campus. The training and vote gathering will have to be done remotely, meaning assistance from EWU students will be crucial to the ability of the AP to provide the election returns to the nation and the world.

The Associated Press Elections is paying $16-$20/hour for work-at-home vote entry operators and supervisors for the 2020 General Election. Operators/supervisors input and monitor incoming vote totals from stringers and websites in counties and cities nationwide for relay to media outlets worldwide. They’re looking for critical thinkers with an eye and ear for accuracy, a sense of urgency, and good communication skills. Computer and cell phone are a must. Training will be provided.

Schedule Details:

  • Evening, 4 hours — software setup and testing
  • Evening, 4 hours — orientation and training
  • Morning, Saturday, Oct. 31, 4 hours — election rehearsal
  • Afternoon, Tuesday, Nov. 3, 8 hours — election tabulation
  • Post election — optional chase hours to tabulate mail-in ballots

Email the AP at kcruz@ap.org to register to work this event. More information for the training dates and times, and the exact work schedules on the day of the election, will be provided.
